Surfing the web: What is it?

Do we know what we’re dealing with?
Nowadays, we take the internet with us. With a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or any other new device on the market, we have the internet at our fingertips. But, are we ready to surf the web? Do we realize the risks, or do we choose to enjoy watching videos, use social networking sites, communicate through email, or browse to our hearts’ content?
Learning to surf the web is easy
For the majority of web surfers, learning how to use the internet came quite naturally. Our first steps were opening a browser. But using the internet is another story. Although there exists a portion of the population that may find surfing on the internet difficult, let’s assume that this kind of surfing isn’t rocket science level difficult.
Assumption 1: Surfing the web isn’t rocket science level difficult for most of us.
What web surfing means
Wait! Let’s back up a bit. What’s all this talk about surfing the web? What does that mean? Where did that metaphor come from anyway?
Since this blog is about surfing the web safely (just look at the web address, safeyoursurf.com), it might not be instantly clear. How could we be clear with a limit of ten characters in a domain name (web address), for most users to remember? That’s a challenge on its own.
We need to know what surfing is first
To surf, you need:
- a surfboard
- an ocean/sea with waves
- a bathing suit (maybe a wet suit to keep you warm)
(A wet suit is special type of clothing worn by surfers to keep them warm, protect their skin, and also help them float.)
Examining the metaphor

Ocean/large body of water | The internet |

(A browser is the program that you use to view websites on the internet.)
Many dangers

Sharks | Hackers |
Whirlpools | Viruses, pharming sites (fake sites) |
Strong currents | Potentially harmful fads on the internet |
Respect the Internet
Just as surfers need to respect the power of nature while riding the waves in an ocean, we forget how powerful the internet is, and how potentially dangerous a place it can be. While riding waves, surfers can see huge waves. They can feel the weight of the water crashing on them. They can be thrown around by a wave and be forced to hold their breath.
But we don’t experience that while surfing the web. It’s too comfortable. It’s too relaxed. We feel safe and powerful with our latest devices and gadgets while sitting down, or leisurely browsing sites. Little do we know that there are hackers all around the world. Some evil ones create viruses and other bad stuff (called malware) that attack our computers, just as sharks can attack surfers (although this is quite rare, compared to virus attacks).
Why does safeyoursurf.com exist?
Clearly, we need to be aware of how to browse or surf the web safely, because no one really teaches us. We just learn it by ourselves as we go. Aren’t you in luck? This blog will explore different aspects of the dangers and risks of web surfing. We’ll teach you how to surf the web safely.
